Kick-off parade marks the start of the Brigada Eskwela '09

Monday, May 18, 2009 Rizal Elementary School headed by its principal Dr. Rhea B. Gutierrez & RES Teaching Force spearheaded the start of the 5 day long nationwide program dubbed “BRIGADA ESKWELA ’09 (together with the Antipolo Sulsugin Elementary School, Pook Elementary Scholl an fthe Cristobal S. Conducto MNHS (formerly RNHS), Two weeks before the opening of classes on June 1, 2009, the Department of Education sets this year’s Brigada Eskwela (BE) or the National Schools Maintenance Week on May 18-22, 2009 in accordance with DepEd Order 25, s. 2009.

Brigada Eskwela is a schools maintenance program nationwide that engages all education stakeholders to contribute their time, effort and resources in ensuring that all public schools are ready in time for school opening. It is a weeklong event where communities, parents, alumni, civic groups, local businesses, non-government organizations and private individuals, including teacher and student volunteers, devote their time and skills to do repairs and maintenance work in public schools.

The annual Brigada Eskwela was conceptualized and started in May, 2003. It is one of the flagship project of the Adopt a School Program (ASP) headed by Dir. Paul Soriano. Adopt a School Program was made into law, the Adopt a School Act or the RA 8525 in 1998. Through the ASP, private sector companies and professionals are given the opportunity to contribute in improving the public education system of the country. To recognize their goodwill, they can avail of tax incentives of up to 150%. Over the years the Adopt-A-School Program has attracted more than 200 partners generating some P6 Billion worth of projects and interventions.

Last year, DepEd Secretary Jesli A. Lapus signed DepEd Order 24, s. 2008 entitled “Institutionalization of the Brigada Eskwela or the National Schools Maintenance Week or the NSMW. It means that whether or not the DepEd will issue a memorandum, the annual BE or NSMW shall be conducted by all public elementary and secondary schools throughout the country two weeks before the start of classes.

The following category of services can be done in the school: masonry, carpentry, plumbing, electrical/electronic, landscaping/gardening and ordinary labor.

As contained in the BE Manual, the Department endeavors to solve the many challenges facing Philippine education, Brigada Eskwela will serve as one of the frontline initiatives reminding each and every Filipino that we are all stakeholders in education.
